New duty-free shop opens at T1 of Pudong airport
Date:2019-05-14

A newly-established duty-free shop for inbound passengers recently opened at Terminal 1 of Shanghai Pudong International Airport.

Expanded to 510 square meters, the new shop also optimizes the layout of brands and decoration to give passengers a better shopping experience.

Passengers can visit the shop after finishing immigration inspection. It’s full of perfumes, cosmetics, cigarettes, and liquor reflecting the needs of passengers, and there are also professional sales personnel who can give shopping advice, a big improvement in both shopping experience and service.

The new shop offers more choice including 32 perfume and cosmetic brands such as La Mer, La Prairie, Guerlain, Decorte, and CPB, 26 luxury brands, 161 cigarette and liquor brands, and 17 food brands, which are comparable with the brands in outbound duty-free shops.

The duty-free shop at Pudong International Airport has gradually developed into the largest one on the mainland as its sales volume has grown since 1999. The proportion of its sales volume in the total amount generated by its counterparts on the mainland rose from 46 percent in 2017 to 50 percent in 2018.

In addition to this duty-free shop at Terminal 1, a similar new shop is also about to open at Terminal 2. If the third stage of a satellite terminal at Pudong airport is put into service, the airport will have another 9,000-square-meter area for duty-free shopping. The total coverage will increase to 17,000 square meters, ranking first among domestic airports.

The airport will continue to bring in more and higher-end brands to stimulate domestic consumption. A total of 19 luxury fashion and leatherwear brands and seven luxury jewelry and wristwatch brands are expected to be introduced by the end of 2022.

Improvement of price competitiveness of 120 kinds of best-selling products such as cigarettes, liquor and wine, general merchandise, and food is anticipated.

The duty-free business also forms a significant part of Shanghai’s goal of building up its shopping brands. The Pudong airport will grasp opportunities brought by the city’s fast-growing tourism market, and use its advantages in developing duty-free business to help the city reach its goal.
